!MEMORIAL:       A Memorial to Kay Stover - June 17, 1968 - Written by Gerald Stover
      Kay didn't want a funeral.
I don't think she would have objected, though, to our gathering here to remember her and trying to take some comfort in so doing.
The effect we have on each other, as human beings, is indestructible and irreversible. Every word, every act, every glance, contributes to the image we retain.
Each of us in this room retains an image of Kay.
We cannot re-create her by compiling our individual images but, she continues to live through these images, and as they influence and modify our lives, she, in effect, is perpetuated to infinity.
But this was not something special about Kay. It is true of all human relationships. What was special about Kay was that she always gave in her light-hearted, casual way she gave herself unselfishly to all of us.
And secretly she took each of us, and our problems, into her heart -- her private garden -- and nourished us with her secret tears.
In return, what did she ask of us? Very little. She rationed our her superficial burdens, but her personal doubts and fears were carefully hidden so as not to trouble us.
Kay didn't want a funeral for fear of being thought a hypocrite. Not realizing that her own unselfish standards, which she developed and lived by, were as valid as those formalized by doctrine. She believed in God, but she didn't believe in religion.
Kay didn't want a funeral, so rather than offering a prayer for Kay maybe we should offer a prayer for ourselves, a prayer for unselfishness, for love, for understanding the needs of others and a will to satisfy those needs through contributing of ourselves.
I believe that if each of us examines his private image of Kay, that under that unique, comical exterior we will recognize these qualities as her personal creed.
We need the insight to recognize the Kay's in this world in time to share their burdens.
May God bless us and keep us and give us strength.
